People news: Syracuse University vice chancellor Haynie named “university professor”

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse University has designated J. Michael Haynie, the school’s vice chancellor for strategic initiatives, a “university professor.”

The distinction — a four-year, renewable appointment — is granted to faculty who “excel in their fields and have made extraordinary scholarly contributions nationally and internationally,” Syracuse said in a news release.

The executive committee of the Syracuse University board of trustees approved the appointment at its recent meeting, the university said.

Haynie is the founding executive director of Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF). He also serves as a professor of entrepreneurship.

The IVMF is “widely acknowledged as higher education’s most known and respected center of thought leadership related to the social, economic and wellness concerns of the nation’s veterans and families,” Syracuse contends.

As the Barnes professor of entrepreneurship, Haynie leads the university’s entrepreneurship and cross-campus “innovation” programs. In addition, he leads Syracuse’s office of veteran and military affairs; the office of government and community engagement; and University College, the school’s “point of entry” for nontraditional and continuing-education students.

“I join [Provost Michele Wheatly] and our community in congratulating Mike on this appointment. His entrepreneurial expertise is routinely leveraged by stakeholders at the highest levels of government, private enterprise and nonprofit organizations, and his scholarship is widely published in the leading academic journals in his field,” Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud said in the school’s release. “His passion for innovation and service has positively impacted the lives of the more than 100,000 veterans and military-connected families served by IVMF programs around the world, and his leadership continues to enrich and enhance our campus community.”
