PJ Green adds new printing press to enhance offerings

The growing company approaches the 100-employee mark

UTICA — A new printing press at PJ Green, Inc. not only allows the company to provide expanded services to existing clients, but will also hopefully attract new clients, its leaders say.

In July, PJ Green announced it added a second Hewlett Packard Indigo 5500 printing press to its fleet, enhancing the company’s capacity.

“Our Indigo presses allow us to generate full-color variable text and images uniquely tailored to each recipient,” company co-owner Rick Green says in an email. The press has the ability to print on a variety of materials including vinyl, foil, decals, clings, cloth, and magnetic, he said, which means PJ Green can offer an array of products to its clients with this press.

Rather than use social media or traditional advertising like commercials, Green says the company sees great success through word-of-mouth advertising. “We have found that our best marketing tool has been repeat business and referrals from our existing client base,” he says. He expects that as word spreads about the Indigo-press offerings, PJ Green will draw new customers.

Green declined to say exactly how much the new press cost, but indicated that the company has committed a large portion of its budget to equipment over the past several years.

Those investments have helped drive double-digit growth at the printing company, a trend Green says he expects to continue this year.

With that growth, PJ Green has already hired several employees, bringing its total employment to nearly 100 workers.

“We have added skilled employees already this year and will continue to add talent to accommodate our growth as needed,” Green says.

Headquartered in 130,000 square feet at 100 Whitesboro St., PJ Green (www.pjgreen.com) provides printing, database, direct mail, and assembly services. Philip J. Green founded the company in 1928.

The fourth generation of the Green family now operates the company, which has satellite offices in Syracuse and Albany.
