“As Utica continues to grow and move in the right direction we will continue to attract national, regional and local businesses,” the mayor said in the news release.

He also thanked Bob Morris, the franchisee who owns several area locations of Planet Fitness, for “investing and believing” in Utica.

Planet Fitness currently operates other nearby fitness centers at 7 New Hartford Shopping Center in New Hartford; at 1895 Black River Blvd. in Rome; and at 2002 Glenwood Ave in Oneida, according to the Planet Fitness website.

Founded in 1992 in Dover, N.H., Planet Fitness is a health-club franchise that describes itself as the “fastest growing” in the U.S., according to the website.

Planet Fitness has about 800 locations and more than 5 million members, the website says.
