Police charge local man with robberies at Lansing credit union and Ithaca bank

ITHACA, N.Y. — Ithaca police said a local man was responsible for a December bank robbery in Ithaca and the robbery of a credit union in Lansing on Jan. 17.

Chaio Slater, 32, with a mailing address in Ithaca, was charged with one count of second-degree robbery for the Dec. 5 robbery of the Tompkins County Trust Company in Ithaca.

He faces an identical charge for the Jan. 17 robbery of the Cornell Federal Credit Union branch in Lansing.

Ithaca Police spokesman Jamie Williamson says Slater is due in court Thursday for a preliminary hearing.

In the meantime, Slater is in jail in lieu of $100,000 bail or $300,000 bond for each count.

Several police agencies were involved in the investigation and arrest, including the Ithaca Police Department, Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department, New York State Police, Cornell University Police Department, Tompkins County District Attorney’s Office and the FBI.

Williamson added that Slater could face more charges, including weapons charges, if his case goes before a grand jury.
