As last-minute filers scurry to submit their federal- and state-tax returns or file for extensions, a new poll finds about 46 percent of New Yorkers think they paid too much in taxes this year.
The same poll from the Siena (College) Research Institute (SRI), released today, also found about 42 percent of respondents believe they paid the right amount.
About 57 percent of those surveyed have either already, or expect to, receive a tax refund, the SRI poll found.
Of those, 62 percent plan to use the refund to pay bills, 39 percent will hold a portion of it for emergencies, and 15 percent save part of it for their retirement.
When asked about their own finances, 35 percent of respondents say they are worse off today than they were a year ago, 29 percent say they are better off, and 36 percent indicated their financial situation hasn’t changed.
SRI conducted the survey April 2-4 and 7-10 by random phone calls (both cell and landline) to 813 New York adults. SRI says it statistically adjusted the data by age, region, and gender to ensure representativeness. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.4 points.
