Rome Memorial Hospital to host summer academy for students interested in health-care careers

ROME, N.Y. — Rome Memorial Hospital (RMH) is accepting applications for its summer Health Care Academy until May 25.

Students entering eighth or ninth grade in this fall can apply for what RMH describes as an “an interactive summer camp for adolescents interested in a career in health care.”

The program, which M&T Bank (NYSE: MTB) and Rome Hospital Foundation are funding, is scheduled at the hospital between Aug. 1 and Aug. 3, RMH said in a news release.

RMH is limiting the camp to 20 students, the hospital said. If selected, students will be required to submit health and immunization records and a registration fee of $30. A limited number of scholarships are available for students needing assistance with the registration fee, RMH said.

“This three-day, hands-on experience exposes students to a wide variety of health-care professions such as respiratory therapy, medical imaging, physical and occupational therapy, pharmacy and nursing,” Julie Chrysler, RMH’s director of education, said. “The campers will have the opportunity to meet with health-care professionals, discuss what they do, and see them in action, in addition to participating in interactive activities.”

Every student will be provided with a set of hospital scrubs, a lanyard with name badge to wear at camp, breakfast, lunch, certificate of participation and a lot of attention from caring health professionals.

“When exploring careers, today’s young people are often faced with choosing between a high tech environment and working with people,” Chrysler said. “Health care is unique because it offers the best of both worlds.”

Those interested can access the online application by visiting www.romehospital.org and clicking on the “For Your Health” tab.
