Senators: FAA awards Oswego County Airport funding for new lighting, guidance system

VOLNEY, N.Y. — The Oswego County Airport will use a grant of more than $648,000 to replace its runway lighting system and to construct a new visual-guidance system.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awarded the funding, U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer (D–N.Y.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D–N.Y.) announced in a news release that Schumer’s office issued.

The Oswego County Airport wants to replace the runway’s “aging” lighting system to “ensure” safe operations, departures and arrivals during low-visibility conditions, according to the lawmakers’ release.

The facility will also use the funding to construct a new visual-guidance system, ensuring that the airport’s runways are “more easily and safely accessible.”

The FAA administers the funding, which is awarded through the airport-improvement program (AIP).

The AIP provides grants to public agencies for the planning and development of public-use airports that are included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS).

Funds obligated for the AIP are drawn from the Airport and Airway Trust fund, which user fees, fuel taxes, and other similar revenue sources support.

“This federal funding will allow the Oswego County Airport to make critical infrastructure upgrades to its lighting and guidance systems that will enable safer, more efficient service for the passengers and pilots who fly in and out of the region every day,” Schumer said in the release.
