Marie Therese Dominguez (at podium), commissioner of the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), on June 23 addressed local reporters on the Interstate 81 access ramp to the Onondaga Lake Parkway while the ramp was still closed for construction work. Dominguez announced several steps that NYSDOT would take to reduce strikes on the low-clearance CSX Railroad bridge located along the Onondaga Lake Parkway. The remedies included reducing the highway to a single lane for a short stretch of both sides of the bridge. The lane reduction goes into effect Tuesday. (Eric Reinhardt / CNYBJ)
SALINA, N.Y. — A portion of the Onondaga Lake Parkway (State Route 370) in the town of Salina on Tuesday will be reduced to one lane of traffic in both directions for about 1,200 feet on either side of the low railway bridge.
The lane reductions will go into effect after the morning rush hour, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) said in its Monday announcement.
The reductions will remain in place “until further notice” as NYSDOT assesses their effectiveness and impact on local traffic conditions.
The reduction is intended to “calm” traffic and give over-height vehicles additional time to heed the warning signs and avoid the bridge.
It’s one of many safety enhancements put in place along Onondaga Lake Parkway by NYSDOT intended to reduce collisions with the low-clearance CSX Railroad bridge located near the midpoint of the parkway.
The department asks drivers to use caution when traveling through the work-zone area and “pay attention” to all traffic-control devices, including signs and flaggers.
Motorists are urged to “slow down and drive responsibly” in work zones. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. Convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license, NYSDOT noted.
