Smith named chief financial officer of UHS

Jay Smith

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — James (Jay) Smith is the new VP for finance and chief financial officer of United Health Services (UHS) and UHS Hospitals in the greater Binghamton area.

In his new role, Smith will manage the financial operations of the health-care organization and work collaboratively with all finance executives and other senior management to safeguard the assets of the organization and provide financial stewardship, according to UHS.

Smith, a certified public accountant, joined UHS in 2018 as senior director and system controller, supervising all accounting for the UHS health-care system. Under his direction, UHS successfully closed multiple capital-raising initiatives including those for the Epic electronic health record implementation and the large public bond offering for the Wilson Hospital project.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he has worked with various sources to ensure that UHS System members receive all available funds, including those through the CARES Act, the payroll Protection Program, and the Medicare advance payments.

“Jay brings to the CFO position a track record that already includes major success stories in our ability to achieve financial stability in the midst of all the pandemic challenges facing us,” UHS President and CEO John M. Carrigg said in a news release. “His understanding of healthcare finance and dedication to the patient experience are leadership qualities that will enable us to thrive in the months and years ahead.”

Prior to joining UHS, Smith worked as corporate controller at IFS Industries and Universal Instruments Corp., according to his LinkedIn profile. He received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.

Smith succeeds Rick Borschuk, who has moved into a new role as a strategy and business-development consultant to the office of the president.

United Health Services, Inc. (nyuhs.org) is a locally owned, not-for-profit hospital and health-care system serving greater Binghamton and the surrounding counties. Founded in 1981, UHS provides a full range of medical, surgical, rehabilitative, and long-term care services.
