St. Joseph’s acquires Upstate Surgical Group practice

SYRACUSE — St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center today announced it has acquired Upstate Surgical Group, P.C.

St. Joseph’s didn’t release any terms of the acquisition in its news release, including the acquisition cost.

Upstate Surgical Group, which has been serving Syracuse–area patients for more than 25 years, is now part of St. Joseph’s Physicians, the hospital said.

The hospital on Sept. 9 announced it is rebranding its ambulatory practices, which include St. Joseph’s Physicians Health and St. Joseph’s Medical, P.C., as St. Joseph’s Physicians.

The acquisition creates a general-surgery division within the ambulatory-services group, which St. Joseph’s owns.

St. Joseph’s and Upstate Surgical completed the acquisition “over the summer,” and the transition “will occur gradually,” according to St. Joseph’s.

The hospital doesn’t anticipate any layoffs following the acquisition.

The acquisition is a “natural extension” of the Upstate Surgical and St. Joseph’s relationship, and is “consistent with a national trend of closer physician/hospital clinical integration,” Dr. Balasubramanian Sivakumar (locally known as Dr. Kumar), senior physician in the group, said in the news release.

“It also reflects St. Joseph’s mission to improve the delivery of healthcare through integration without sacrificing our commitment to quality care for every patient,” Kathryn Ruscitto, St. Joseph’s president and CEO, also added in the news release.

The surgical practice will function independently of St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center, according to the hospital.

Its operational-leadership team includes members of the practice’s current leadership team, along with members of the St. Joseph’s Physicians operations group.

The practice group consists of physicians Dr. Balasubramanian Sivakumar, Dr. Thomas Certo, Dr. Anthony Oliva, Dr. Ara Madonian, Dr. Atul Maini, Dr. Arthur Vercillo, Dr. Melinda Stevens, and Dr. David Wormuth.
