SYRACUSE — St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center will use a $2.5 million state grant to help fund a second phase in its $140 million hospital expansion.
Empire State Development awarded the grant as part of the state’s Regional Economic Development Council initiative. It will help pay for a new 104,000-square-foot patient tower with operating-room suites, private patient rooms, and intensive-care units.
The tower will have 110 private patient rooms for the hospital’s medical and surgical intensive-care units. It will also include a 73,000-square-foot surgical suite with 14 operating rooms.
Other portions of the project include a 25-bed post-anesthesia care unit and a corridor meant to channel people toward local businesses. In addition, the new tower will contain family waiting areas, space for support services, and space for staff education.
The project will create 400 long-term construction jobs and almost 150 permanent health-care jobs, according to St. Joseph’s. Permanent jobs will include positions in nursing, admissions, housekeeping, security, maintenance, and transporting.
St. Joseph’s expects its hospital expansion to be complete in 2014. It will pursue Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, certification for the complex.
St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center is a nonprofit hospital with 431 beds and a health-care network that serves patients from Onondaga County and 15 surrounding counties. It is affiliated with Franciscan Management Services, Inc. and sponsored by the Sisters of St. Francis.
