State allocates research funding to Upstate Medical, SUNY Oswego, SUNY Poly

ALBANY, N.Y. — Three regional SUNY campuses are among 14 that are allotting a total of nearly $10 million in annual state funding to expand their research capacity.

The campuses include Upstate Medical University, SUNY Oswego, and SUNY Polytechnic Institute, the office of Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Monday.

The funding was secured through the 2023-24 state budgets $163 million increase in direct operating aid to SUNY campuses.

The announcement didnt include specific dollar figures on how much the state allocated to each campus.

SUNY Upstate Medical is using its funding to purchase specialized equipment to fight disease and understand brain structure at the molecular level. Both tools were requested by faculty spanning health and particle research, Hochuls office said.

SUNY Oswego is using its allocation to support the Great Lakes Institute to conduct research around waterquality monitoring; watershed maintenance; meteorological, climate, and socio-economic issues; fisheries and hatcheries; freshwater use and scarcity;indigenous people issues; computational and ecosystem modeling; Great Lake resilience;and waterlevel issues.

SUNY Polytechnic Institute will use its research funding to create research centers in areas such as civil engineering, robotics and advanced communications, and advanced manufacturing, per Hochuls office.
