State attorney general investigating Hamilton tax and insurance firm

WAMPSVILLE, N.Y. — New York Attorney General Letitia James on Tuesday announced that her office is investigating a Madison County tax preparation and insurance-services firm.

Madison County officials say the investigation comes following an inquiry by the Hamilton Police Department into an 8 percent promissory-note fund established by M. Burton Marshall of Hamilton and his firm Miles B. Marshall, Inc.

After involving the Madison County District Attorney’s Office and the New York State Police, Hamilton Police quickly discovered a similar inquiry had been made to the state attorney general’s office and an investigation was already underway.

“Learning that the people you entrust with your finances and investments may be misusing your hard-earned money is scary and concerning,” James said in a news release. “My office has been notified of multiple complaints regarding potential irregularities at the offices of Miles B. Marshall, Inc. and M. Burton Marshall, and we are committed to conducting a thorough investigation of this matter.”

James did not release any further details. Those who have been impacted, and have not already contacted law enforcement, may contact the attorney general’s office at MBMarshall.complaint@ag.ny.gov.

M. Burton Marshall declined to comment when reached by phone at his office.
