WAMPSVILLE, N.Y. — The state has awarded Madison County $500,000 for the development of Delphi Falls County Park in Cazenovia.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is providing the funding.

The money is part of the awards announced Tuesday as part of the Regional Economic Development Council competition, Madison County said in a Wednesday news release. The funding for work at Delphi Falls is among a total of nearly $5 million awarded for 13 projects in Madison County.

The Madison County Planning Department — in conjunction with the county’s highway and facilities departments — has been working to develop a plan to improve the park. For example, the falls are currently viewable and accessible only from the bottom, Madison County said.

The county will use the funding for the first phase of improvements. They include more accessible features for viewing the falls in “other locations other than the bottom,” trail development, overlooks, parking, restrooms, and day-use features.

Madison County acquired the 65-acre property back in May. Delphi Falls County Park opened to the public in August.
