State awards MVCC science-program grants

UTICA, N.Y. — Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) will use new grant funding to continue the science and technology entry program (STEP) and the collegiate science and technology-entry program (CSTEP).

The grant took effect July 1 and will continue through June 30, 2020, MVCC said in a news release Monday.

The New York State Education Department awarded the grants, which total $320,000. Each award is worth $160,000, MVCC said in an email message following a BJNN inquiry.

The grant covers a “significant” increase in the services that the programs provide, MVCC said.

The grants enable the college to double the number of students the programs serve from 40 to 80.

MVCC and the state Education Department jointly sponsor STEP. It seeks to encourage qualified middle and high-school students to consider careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and licensed professions.

Programming includes peer mentoring, tutoring, standardized-test preparation, college visits, workshops, and educational field trips.

CSTEP serves MVCC students who are from “underrepresented” populations and are pursuing education in a STEM, health-related, or licensed profession, MVCC said.

Services include career exploration; tutoring; financial, personal and academic advisement; and a support system that “engages the students and encourages their success.”
