Five Southern Tier municipalities will receive grants from the New York State Department of State to help them recover from flooding that swept the region after Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.

The Village of Owego in Tioga County, Village of Sidney in Delaware County, Town of Nichols in Tioga County, Town of Tioga in Tioga County, and Town of Union in Broome County will receive grants. In addition, eight other municipalities in the eastern portion of New York State are slated to receive grants.

“These grants will go directly to communities that were hit hard by the devastating floods last summer,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a news release. “This funding will help towns and villages rebuild and find ways to make sure they are better prepared for future flooding.”

Each of the Southern Tier municipalities will receive $50,000 grants, with the exception of Union, which will receive $49,833. The money will go toward projects that include planning to restore housing and business districts as well as making infrastructure more resistant to storm damage.

Grant awards to the five Southern Tier municipalities and eight other towns and villages totaled $649,421. New York is offering a second round of grants with an application deadline of March 1 at 4 p.m.

Municipalities, counties, or not-for-profits working on a municipality’s behalf can submit applications for the second-round grants, which can be up to $50,000 each.
