SYRACUSE — A professor at the Syracuse University School of Information Studies (iSchool) will be president of the American Library Association (ALA) next year.
Barbara Stripling, an assistant professor of practice, will become president-elect of the organization next month and assume the presidency for a one-year term in June 2013. ALA has 60,000 members including librarians, library trustees, and library supporters.
Stripling joined the iSchool faculty in January after serving for six years as director of library services for New York City’s Department of Education. She has also been an adjunct professor for the iSchool since 2007.
“I am honored and humbled to have an opportunity to lead the American Library Association at this critical and exciting time for our nation’s libraries,” Stripling said in a news release. “I will dedicate myself to supporting our member’s efforts to transform their libraries into virtual and face-to-face community centers of conversation, equitable access to information, participatory learning, and civic engagement.”
