SU student company honored by Inc.

SYRACUSE — A company launched by a Syracuse University (SU) student has been chosen as of the Coolest College Startups for 2013 by Inc. magazine.

Soulscarf originated last fall while Celeste Currie, a student in SU’s School of Information Studies, was taking a class aimed at helping students develop business concepts. The company sells a knitted wrap-around scarf and donates 20 percent of its proceeds on sales to charities including the ASPCA, Feed the Children, Project H Design, and the Breast Cancer Society, Inc.

Purchasers of the $44 scarves choose the recipient.

As one of 12 companies selected by Inc., Currie won admission to the New York International Gift Fair where she showcased her goods to different markets, met with buyers, and connected with other exhibitors. This spring, she is expanding her line to include variations on fabrics, colors, and patterns, according to SU.

The company’s website is at http://www.soulscarf.com/.
