SU, Upstate Medical alum named president-elect of AMA

Dr. Andrew Gurman, a graduate of Syracuse University (SU) and Upstate Medical University, is the new president-elect of the American Medical Association (AMA), the nation’s largest physician organization.

Gurman will assume the office in July 2016, Upstate Medical said in a news release posted on its website on Friday.

Gurman, an orthopedic hand surgeon from Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, graduated from Upstate Medical in 1980, the school said.

A native of New York City, Gurman attended SU before entering Upstate’s College of Medicine.  He earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and molecular from SU in 1973, according to his LinkedIn page.

The AMA on Wednesday announced the election of Gurman as president. The election took place during the annual meeting of the AMA House of Delegates in Chicago, according to a news release on the AMA website.

Gurman for the past eight years has served as the speaker and vice speaker of the House of Delegates, the AMA’s primary policy-making body, and has been an “active” member of the AMA board of trustees, Upstate Medical said.
