SUNY appoints officer-in-charge at Empire State College

Mitchell Nesler

ALBANY, N.Y. — SUNY Chancellor Kristina Johnson has appointed Mitchell Nesler as officer-in-charge of SUNY Empire State College.

He currently serves as VP of decision support at the college.

Nesler’s appointment, which is the equivalent of an acting director position, is effective March 3. It will continue until SUNY’s board of trustees or the chancellor “take other action,” SUNY said in a news release issued Monday.

Nesler assumes the officer-in-charge role following the departure of Merodie Hancock, who is set to become the fourth president of Thomas Edison State University (TESU) in Trenton, New Jersey on March 5, according to the TESU website.

About Nesler

In his current role, Nesler is responsible for providing “overall leadership” for the college’s “strategic”-planning processes, SUNY said. That includes assessment of student learning and “other institutional outcomes,” business analytics, and directing the college’s data warehouse and institutional-research function.

He also serves as the accreditation-liaison officer for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Prior to joining Empire State College in 2003, Nesler was the associate dean for outcomes assessment and research at Excelsior College. In his time with Excelsior, Nesler held positions in research and assessment over nine years, including as director of research, academic programs, and director of nursing research.

Nesler has also taught at the University at Albany, SUNY Empire State College, and Siena College.
