SUNY Athletic Conference relocates HQ

CORTLAND — The headquarters for the State University of New York (SUNY) Athletic Conference is now located on the campus of SUNY Cortland.

The division III league relocated it base from Fredonia in a move to provide a more central meeting spot for its 10 members.

“This is really just about geography, plain and simple,” Azure Davey, conference commissioner, said in a news release.

In addition to SUNY Cortland, members include Brockport, Buffalo State, Fredonia, Geneseo, New Paltz, Oneonta, Oswego, Plattsburgh, and Potsdam plus affiliate member Morrisville in two sports.

“Being centrally located, Cortland affords us an opportunity to have a point place for folks to convene,” Davey said. “I can’t ask people to drive from Plattsburgh to Fredonia for an in-person meeting. But I can from time to time ask them to meet at a central location in the state.”

Davey served as assistant athletic director for compliance, student services, and scheduling at SUNY Cortland from 2004 to 2006. The conference employs an assistant commissioner and one part-time employee as well.

The move will save members money since they can now come and go without having to pay for lodging, Davey added.

The conference oversees more than a dozen committees on issues like eligibility infractions, and scheduling in addition to championship committees for its 20 sports. Its offices are located in the Park Center at SUNY Cortland.
