SUNY Oswego, SUNY Canton get $3 million for building upgrades

OSWEGO — State Senator Patty Ritchie announced she has helped secure $3 million in special funding to be divided between SUNY Canton and SUNY Oswego for what she termed “much needed additions and upgrades.”

At SUNY Oswego, $1 million in funding will be used to construct three “high-tech” classrooms in the school of education with the goal of familiarizing teachers with new types of technology to enhance learning, according to a news release from Ritchie’s office. Also, $500,000 in funding will be used to upgrade the college’s theater, which the public also utilizes.

SUNY Canton will allocate $1 million in funding for the rehabilitation of its dining center to make it handicapped accessible and host future community events.  And, $500,000 will go toward expanding the college’s nursing program, which recently had to cut its number of nursing students because of a lack of hospital internships in the area, the release said. The expansion will allow SUNY Canton to offer such internships on campus.

“I’m thrilled to have been able to secure this funding, which will go a long way towards helping two of our local SUNY schools make the improvements necessary for offering top-notch educational opportunities to students,” Ritchie (R–48th Senate District, encompassing St. Lawrence, Jefferson, and Oswego counties) said in the news release.
