MARCY, N.Y. — The Department of Nursing at SUNY Polytechnic Institute is now the School of Nursing, a change that reflects the program’s growth and impact over the years, the college announced.
The new name coincides with the 50-year anniversary of the college’s nursing program.
“This renaming underscores the extraordinary achievements of our nursing program and its vital role in advancing health care for five decades,” Provost Andrew Russell said in the announcement.

The name change comes as the college is expanding its health-sciences wing and modernizing nursing labs, with help from state funding.
“The timing of this renaming is especially meaningful as it aligns with the 50th anniversary of our nursing program,” Mark Kittleson, dean of the College of Health Sciences, said. “It reflects not only the program’s rich history but also its bright future. I am deeply grateful to our nursing faculty and staff for their exceptional commitment and tireless efforts, as well as to campus leadership for their unwavering support in bringing this meaningful change to fruition.”
SUNY Poly officials said the name change enhances opportunities for students, the faculty, and the college as well as highlights the school’s leadership in nursing education across all levels and honors the contributions of faculty, staff, and alumni over the past 50 years.
It will also help the college’s efforts to attract students, faculty, and donors to strengthen the program further.
SUNY Poly offers a range of nursing and health-related programs including an RN to BS program that provides registered nurses with an associate degree a pathway to earn their bachelor’s degree online. The college’s 1+2+1 nursing partnership pathway, in collaboration with Mohawk Valley Health System/St. Elizabeth’s College of Nursing provides a pathway for students to earn their associate degree, registered nurse credentials, and a bachelor’s degree seamlessly.
The college also offers a master’s degree and certificate of advanced studies in family nurse practitioner and nursing education and a certificate of advanced studies and doctor of nursing practice specializing in psychiatric mental-health nurse practitioner.
SUNY Poly’s College of Health Science also offers undergraduate degrees in community and behavioral health and health information management and a fully online graduate program in health informatics.
