Syracuse airport passenger traffic is up nearly 11 percent so far in 2019

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Passenger traffic at Syracuse Hancock International Airport has increased 10.7 percent during the first two months of 2019, compared to the year-ago period.

The Syracuse Regional Airport Authority (SRAA) sees it as a statistic that “further builds on the success of 2018” when more than 2.3 million passengers passed through the airport, up 11.6 percent from 2017, SRAA said in a Wednesday news release.

The authority expects that passenger traffic will increase “even higher” as 2019 continues, noting the recent announcement of two new nonstop routes. United Airlines, Inc. in February announced daily nonstop service to Denver, which will begin in June. Additionally, Nevada–based Allegiant will start nonstop flights to Sarasota in April.

The addition of Denver, Colorado–based Frontier Airlines into the Syracuse market last July 2018, along with the addition of new routes by Allegiant, has “fueled the exceptional growth,” SRAA contends. Those two airlines introduced eight new nonstop routes to the Syracuse market in 2018.

The added routes bring to 24 the total number of nonstop destinations available to Central New Yorkers flying out of Syracuse, SRAA said.

Frontier Airlines, which announced its Syracuse service last April, launched nonstop flights to Denver and Raleigh/Durham last July. The low-cost carrier later added nonstop routes to Orlando, Chicago, Ft. Myers, and Tampa, boosting to six the number of nonstop destinations from Syracuse served by Frontier.

Allegiant Air launched new nonstop service to Orlando-Sanford last May. It later introduced nonstop flights to Nashville, Tennessee and Florida locations that include Punta Gorda and Sarasota. Allegiant now flies nonstop to seven destinations from Syracuse.
