Syracuse airport projects 10 percent increase in winter-break travelers

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse Hancock International Airport announced that airlines are adding 59 flights for the winter-break travel period, projecting a 10 percent increase in travelers compared to the same time period last year.

Current projections have both Saturday, Feb. 15, and Saturday, Feb. 22 scheduled as the busiest travel days of the winter break stretch, the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority (SRAA) said in a news release.

The anticipated increase comes after a 9.4 percent increase in passenger traffic during January 2020 compared to a year ago. Also, 2019 marked the highest volume of passenger traffic at Hancock Airport in three decades.

“Given our traffic projections, we will be going into overflow parking, so we are encouraging folks to arrive early and allow themselves extra time for parking and to get through the security checkpoint,” Jason Terreri, director of Syracuse Hancock International Airport, said.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials are recommending that all passengers arrive at least two hours prior to their scheduled departure, especially during peak periods.

SRAA is also reminding those picking up passengers to use the cell phone lot. The lot is free of charge and has a flight information display, so people can track all arriving flights.

Hancock International Airport also says it will have its Pets Easing Travelers (PET) therapy dogs roaming the terminal and its Fly Guide Airport Ambassadors available to help passengers navigate the airport.
