Syracuse airport says April passenger traffic rebounds to pre-pandemic levels

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The number of travelers using Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) in April rebounded to surpass pre-pandemic levels, the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority (SRAA) announced Thursday.

A total of 225,898 passengers passed through the Syracuse airport in April, an 8.5 percent increase from April 2019 when 208,244 passengers passed through Hancock. The airport had its busiest year in three decades in 2019 with just under 2.6 million total passengers.

“As traffic levels surge beyond pre-pandemic numbers, we strongly encourage travelers to give themselves plenty of time before their flight to not only comfortably get from the curb to their gate, but also enjoy the growing list of amenities our airport has to offer along the way,” Jason Terreri, executive director of SRAA, said in a release.

In addition, local Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials “strongly urge” travelers to arrive at SYR two hours prior to their scheduled departure, especially during peak hours. Peak TSA checkpoint traffic at the airport generally occurs between 4:30 a.m. and 6 a.m.; 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.; and 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Airport officials also remind drivers who are picking up arriving passengers that pick-ups now occur at the outer curb lines of the airport, adjacent each terminal. Pick-up drivers can follow the color-coded signs directing motorists to the appropriate pick-up areas. The front curb line of the airport is reserved for drop offs only. To protect the safety of pedestrians and motorists, drivers are not permitted to sit and wait along the side of Col. Eileen Collins Blvd.
