Hoophall is short for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, which the organization also uses for its website address.
Syracuse cited the Basketball Hall of Fame’s Wednesday announcement in its own news release issued the same day.
The Syracuse–Kansas matchup is part of a doubleheader which also includes Miami facing Princeton in the same venue. ESPN will televise the games. Tickets are now on sale for the event.
The contest between Syracuse and Kansas will be the culmination of a multi-team event in which both teams will each host Oakland University, the University of Toledo, and Texas Southern University on their campuses.
The game between Miami and Princeton will be considered a single game in their respective schedules.
“We are excited to participate in the 2017 Hoophall Miami Invitational,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said in the school’s news release. “The opportunity to play a quality program like Kansas in Miami will be as strong a test as we could hope for our team.”
Syracuse ended its 2016-17 season with a 19-15 record after losing to Mississippi, 85-80, in the second round of the NIT.
Kansas finished its season at 31-5, losing to Oregon, 74-60, in the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri.
Syracuse and Kansas have met five times previously and the Orange have won three of the pairings.
The matchups included Syracuse’s 81-78 victory in the 2003 NCAA Tournament championship game.
The teams most recently squared off in the championship game of the 2008 CBE Classic in Kansas City, when Syracuse defeated the Jayhawks, 89-81, in overtime.
As for Oakland, Texas Southern, and Toledo, Syracuse has played each of the schools twice and won both meetings in each case.
