Syracuse basketball to play Colgate again after one-year hiatus

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse basketball will once again play Colgate, its most familiar foe, next season after COVID-19 put the local rivalry on hold for one season.

Syracuse announced Wednesday that is scheduled to meet the Raiders on Saturday, Nov. 20, in the Carrier Dome. The two programs snapped a streak of 27 straight annual meetings in the 2020-21 season because Colgate didn’t play a non-conference schedule amid the pandemic.

Colgate, a power in the Patriot League, is Syracuse’s most familiar foe, with the two clubs having faced off 172 times. The Orange lead the all-time series against the Raiders, 127-45, and have won 54 straight games against the school from Hamilton. In the schools’ last meeting on Nov. 13, 2019, the Orange won 70-54.

Colgate was 14-2 last season and won the Patriot League Tournament to make the NCAA as a 14 seed, where it lost to 3 seed Arkansas, 85-68. The Raiders won the Patriot regular-season crown in the season before that.

Syracuse was 18-10 in the 2020-21 season. The No. 11 seed Orange upset 6 seed San Diego State and 3 seed West Virginia to make the Sweet 16 before losing to Houston.

Syracuse men’s basketball starts competition on Oct. 27 with an exhibition game vs. Pace University from Division II. The Orange are scheduled to start the regular season on Nov. 9 when they host Lafayette College, which, like Colgate, is also a member of the Patriot League.
