Syracuse Chancellor Syverud elected to Middle States Commission on Higher Education

Syracuse University Chancellor and President Kent Syverud has been elected as a commissioner of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). His three-year term will begin Jan. 1, the university announced.

The MSCHE is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. MSCHE accredits colleges and universities in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and other locations abroad.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to partner with colleagues across the higher education landscape in this new role,” Syverud said in a Syracuse University news release. “The Middle States Commission on Higher Education does important work to ensure institutions of higher education are delivering a high-quality academic experience.”

The MSCHE has 26 volunteer members who are elected by the colleges and universities accredited by the commission. They make decisions on the accreditation of institutions of higher education and form commission policies. The commission is currently planning to make improvements to its accreditation processes, according to the release.
