Syracuse man accused of creating bar codes to steal $10K worth of items from Home Depot stores

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The New York State Police announced Monday they have arrested a Syracuse man for making off with about $10,000 worth of stolen merchandise in a scheme involving creating fake bar codes.

State Police in North Syracuse last Saturday arrested Jeffrey G. Gordon, age 37, for three counts of 4th degree grand larceny, a felony, and one count of petit larceny, a misdemeanor.

The Home Depot Loss Prevention Office in Camillus contacted State Police after it discovered that Gordon was creating barcodes for less-expensive store items, scanning the fake barcodes at self-checkout scanners, and paying the “fraudulently lower prices,” the State Police said in a release.

An investigation found Gordon had done this 28 times from November 2020 until February 2021, in the Home Depot locations in DeWitt, Camillus, Clay, Cicero, Auburn, and Watertown. The total amount of theft across all counties and townships is about $10,000, according to troopers.

Gordon was processed at the State Police station in North Syracuse and released on appearance tickets.
