He comes to the Phoenix staff after one season as head coach of Division II Wheeling University in West Virginia. He is the son of former Wisconsin Badgers head coach Bo Ryan and has 15 years of experience as a Division I assistant coach.

Syracuse was 18-14 last season and had won its first ACC Tournament game over North Carolina before the coronavirus pandemic ended the college basketball season. Syracuse returns four of five starters, including junior guard Buddy Boeheim (15.3 points per game).
