Syracuse University appoints Coates to new leadership position at Whitman School

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University announced the creation of a new leadership position, executive director of administration and strategic initiatives — appointing Kevin Coates to the role, effective July 1.

“The new position seeks to advance the implementation of the Whitman School’s strategic plan and its ability to successfully pursue its ambitious goals,” the school said in a news release.

In this role, Coates is responsible for building required staff capacity, coordinating and integrating activities and operations, and long-range planning and forecasting. He will directly oversee Whitman’s career services, alumni relations, corporate relations, financial operations, and analytics/assessment units, as well as other strategic supporting activities as needed.

Coates was formerly director of budget, finance, and business analytics. He came to the Whitman School in 2016. He previously served in an administrative role at Cornell University, where he was responsible for analytics, financial metrics, and reporting. “He was instrumental in building a business intelligence team for Cornell’s alumni affairs and development office,” the release stated.

Coates earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Utica.
