SYRACUSE, N.Y. — As of June 1, Syracuse University will require all students, faculty, and staff to have a COVID-19 vaccination to be involved in campus activities.

The same requirement will apply to all new and returning students, along with faculty and staff, for the fall semester.

Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud announced the obligation in a Thursday message to the campus community that was posted on the school’s news website.

Medical and religious exemptions will be accommodated, but the expectation is the “vast majority” of the SU community will receive a vaccination.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the University has taken actions to create a safe living, learning and working environment. Having our students, faculty and staff vaccinated is the next important step in protecting our community,” Syverud wrote.

For students who have already been vaccinated — or choose to be vaccinated at an off-campus location — they should submit documentation through the student patient portal, Syverud said. Faculty and staff will receive and are expected to complete a brief COVID-19 vaccine status attestation questionnaire.

The documentation is “consistent with the University’s flu-vaccination protocol,” per Syverud’s message.
