Syracuse women’s basketball team earns at-large bid to NCAA Tournament

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse University women’s basketball team has earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament as an 8 seed in the Bridgeport region.

The team will play the 9th seeded Iowa State Cyclones Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Connecticut.

Should the Orange women prevail in their first-round game, they would advance to face the winner of the matchup between the top-seeded Connecticut (UConn) Huskies and the 16th seeded Albany Great Danes.

The second-round game is scheduled for Monday.

The UConn women enter the tournament having won 107 consecutive games, including the 2016 NCAA Tournament championship game in which it defeated Syracuse, 82-51. UConn is seeking its fifth straight national championship.

The Orange are making their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance under head coach Quentin Hillsman and ninth appearance in program history.

Syracuse is one of 14 teams nationally that has advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament each of the past three seasons.

For the eighth straight year, the Orange have notched 20 victories, recording 21 victories on the 2016-17 campaign.

In addition, the club has recorded double-digit wins in conference play for the fifth straight season, the school said.

Syracuse is led by senior guard Alexis Peterson and redshirt senior guard Brittney Sykes. The university referred to the teammates as “America’s top-scoring backcourt.”

Peterson was named the Orange program’s fourth All-American on March 10, while Sykes collected Blue Ribbon Panel and coaches’ All-Atlantic Coast Conference first-team honors.
