ELBRIDGE, N.Y. — A Tessy Plastics employee died Tuesday morning after having a medical emergency as he arrived at work and driving into a pond behind the manufacturing plant.

State Police in Elbridge were called to the Tessy Plastics plant on Route 5 in Elbridge at 5:22 a.m. regarding a vehicle in the retention pond behind the business.

The preliminary investigation determined that Tessy employee, Thomas R. Carlton, age 54 of Weedsport, experienced a medical event while driving his 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse into the company’s parking lot. Carlton’s car drove across the parking area, entered the pond, and became submerged.

Emergency workers tried to rescue the man but were unable to do so, State Police say. Carlton was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is scheduled to determine an official cause of death.

State Police were assisted at the scene by the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, Jordan Fire Department, and Jordan Ambulance. The investigation is continuing.
