Thruway stop leads to arrest of man accused of theft at Syracuse-area Dick’s Sporting Goods

SULLIVAN, N.Y. — New York State Police say that last Friday afternoon they stopped a vehicle on I-90 in the town of Sullivan for a vehicle and traffic violation.

During the interview of the driver — Anthony M. Monaco, 50, of Manchester, N.Y. — police determined that there were two active warrants for Monaco’s arrest from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and Town of DeWitt Police Department for grand larceny.

While conducting an inventory of the vehicle, state police found “$3,059 worth of brand new sporting goods… along with wire cutters and an anti-theft magnetic attachment used to bypass security tags,” according to a news release.

Troopers say an investigation revealed the property was stolen from Dick’s Sporting Goods in the Syracuse area.

Monaco was charged with 3rd degree grand larceny, a felony; possession of burglar tools, a misdemeanor, and a vehicle and traffic violation.

Monaco was arraigned before the Village of Canastota Court and remanded to the Madison County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond. No return court date is available at this time, the New York State Police said.
