Town of Salina Supervisor Mark Nicotra on Tuesday announced he plans to leave the position to become executive communications director for Onondaga County Executive J. Ryan McMahon II, effective Dec. 31. (Photo credit: Town of Salina website)

Nicotra’s responsibilities will include the dissemination of public communications and information with various government, private and nonprofit partners in the community, McMahon’s office said in a Tuesday news release.

Nicotra will also work with those entities to find “new and collaborative” ways to help implement McMahon’s vision for Onondaga County. They’ll also work to address “pressing” issues such as poverty, infrastructure, and a restructured approach to economic development.

“Mark has done an outstanding job as supervisor of the Town of Salina and I am grateful that he has agreed to join our team and help implement our vision for our community as a whole.” McMahon said in the news release.

Nicotra said he is “excited” to join McMahon’s office and “assist in sharing with the public and our fellow government and community partners the good work being done.”

“As town supervisor, I understood how important it was to communicate with the citizens of Salina and I look forward to bringing those skills to the county executive’s office,” Nicotra said in the county’s news release

Nicotra has served as town supervisor in Salina since 2008. He earlier served on the Salina Town Board for three terms from 2002 to 2007, per a news release that Nicotra’s office tweeted on Tuesday.

Salina Deputy Supervisor and First Ward Councilor Colleen Gunnip will assume the role of supervisor at 12 a.m. on Dec. 31, per the Salina news release.

Prior to becoming the Salina supervisor, Nicotra also spent 12 years as a videographer and editor for WSTM-TV, Syracuse’s NBC affiliate.
