TYRE — The town of Tyre in Seneca County last Thursday night voted to approve a resolution supporting the Wilmot Casino and Resort.

The document also urged the New York State Gaming Commission to award the proposed casino a license in the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier region.

Wilmorite, Inc., a Rochester–based commercial real-estate development, construction, and management company, announced the town-board approval in a news release distributed Friday.

Wilmorite proposes to build a casino and plans to pursue one of the four casino licenses that are available in Upstate.

Besides its support for the casino project, the town of Tyre board also approved a formal “host community” agreement and a site plan for its development, Wilmorite said.

Town lawmakers also found no hurdles to the proposed development under the required process through the State Environmental Quality Review Act, the company added.

Wilmorite officials “look forward” to submitting an application later this month, Thomas Wilmot, Sr. chairman of Wilmorite, Inc., said in the release.

“With Tyre and Seneca County behind us, with the biggest and best proposal in the region and with the ability to deliver on our commitments to the people of this region, we know we will be successful in winning the license for the Finger Lakes [and] Southern Tier region,” Wilmot said.

Wilmorite submitted a $1 million application fee to the New York State Gaming Commission on April 23.

The April 23 fee submission means the Wilmot facility will submit an application to compete for a license to build a $350 million casino, hotel, resort, and spa in Seneca County.

The more than 80-acre site for the proposed casino is situated near exit 41 of the New York State Thruway.

Wilmorite is not the only area entity bidding to secure one of the licenses.

Other area competitors for a casino license include Traditions at the Glen in Broome County and Tioga Downs Casino Racing & Entertainment in Tioga County.
