Trustee to serve as interim OCC head

SYRACUSE — Margaret M. “Meg” O’Connell will take over as interim president of Onondaga Community College (OCC) on July 1.

Current President Debbie Sydow will leave the school July 1 to become president of Richard Bland College in Petersburg, Va., OCC announced last week. Sydow is a native of Virginia and joined OCC in 2000 after working in the Virginia Community College system.

OCC plans to conduct a national search for Sydow’s successor. O’Connell, currently chairwoman of OCC’s Board of Trustees, is not a candidate.

She will take a leave of absence from the board by June 30.

“Meg is a steady, thoughtful leader who will keep the institution focused on its core mission and priorities during this period of transition,” Sydow said in a news release.

OCC has nearly 13,000 students and nearly 50 programs of study.
