Two arrested after stealing purse, cash, and credit cards in Cortland County

CORTLANDVILLE, N.Y. — The New York State Police announced Friday that two Broome County residents have been arrested for a theft of a purse — and the cash and credit cards inside it — from a shopping cart at a supermarket in the town of Cortlandville last September.

State Police have arrested Matthew C. Mason, 29 of Deposit, for two counts of the felony of grand larceny in the fourth degree and Tammy L. Moore, 44 of Binghamton,  for the misdemeanor of identity theft in the third degree.

On Sept. 20, 2018, troopers from the Homer barracks at learned that a victim’s purse was taken while shopping at a Tops supermarket in the town of Cortlandville. The victim later reported that her credit cards were used in Binghamton. An investigation revealed that Mason stole the purse and its contents of several credit cards, cash, and other items totaling more than $1,000, according to Trooper Aga Dembinska, public information officer with State Police Troop C. The credit cards were used by Moore at several locations in Cortlandville and Binghamton, according to a State Police news release.

State Police issued an arrest warrant for  Mason after an investigator learned that he was incarcerated at Willard Drug Treatment Campus. Mason was arrested, transported, and arraigned at the town of Cortlandville court on April 1, the State Police said.
