United Way of Central New York hires Eaton as new president

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse–based United Way of Central New York (UWCNY) has hired Nancy Kern Eaton as its new president.

The organization’s board of directors approved the hire with a “unanimous” vote, the United Way said in a news release.

Eaton has worked in the local nonprofit sector for more than 20 years, including her current work with ARISE, the United Way said. Eaton is the organization’s chief development officer and director of inclusive recreation, according to the ARISE website. ARISE describes itself as an “independent living center that provides disability services for people of all ages and abilities in Syracuse and Central New York.”

Eaton also has “significant volunteer experience” with the United Way dating back to 1999, supporting resource development and community-impact initiatives.

She will begin her new duties with the United Way on July 10. Eaton will replace Frank Lazarski, who will retire at the end of August following a 14-year career with the United Way.

“We are delighted to welcome Nancy to the United Way. She is very well-known throughout Central New York and brings a broad level of experience and passion to the position that will lead us as we continue our vital work in the community,” Virginia Biesiada O’Neill, vice chair of the UWCNY Board, said in the release.

O’Neill led a 14-person committee in the search for a new president, the United Way said.
