SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Upstate Medical University has named Dr. G. Randall Green division chief of cardiac surgery.
Green will also serve as co-director of the Upstate Heart Institute and associate professor of surgery.
His appointment is effective Sept. 1, Steven Scott, interim CEO of Upstate University Hospital, and Dr. Robert Cooney, professor and chair of the department of surgery, said in an Upstate Medical news release.
Scott described Green as “an innovative thinker with a winning combination of business and medical expertise that will serve our patients well in establishing a new, comprehensive approach to heart care.”
Green comes to Upstate from St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center in Syracuse, where he is a cardiothoracic surgeon and has served as program director for its division of cardiac surgery since 2011, Upstate Medical said.
He is also a partner with the medical practice Cardiac Surgery Associates of CNY, PC. Prior to joining that medical practice, he was affiliated with Cleveland Clinic New York, PC.
In the most recent state New York State Department of Health report on cardiac-surgery outcomes, Green was one of six surgeons in the state and the only one in Central New York with a risk-adjusted mortality rate “significantly lower” than the state average. The state report covered the years between 2012 and 2014, Upstate Medical said.
“Dr. Green is an outstanding cardiac surgeon with high quality clinical outcomes and success in building quality programs,” Cooney said in the release. “He brings to Upstate the expertise and experience necessary to help create the Upstate Heart Institute.”
The Upstate Heart Institute is a “presidential priority” in Upstate’s recently launched strategic plan, which calls for strengthening Upstate’s cardiovascular service by expanding existing cardiology and cardiovascular services.
Green indicated he was “interested” in Upstate’s plans to develop the Upstate Heart Institute.
“My goal is to create a high quality, high volume, highly efficient academic cardiac surgical program that supports Upstate’s education and research missions,” he said. “I respect the fine clinical work being done at Upstate and am eager to build upon this foundation.”
About Green
Green is board certified in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery. In addition to service on several local boards, Green is a member of the strategy group at the Center for Healthcare Innovation, a Chicago, Illinois–based nonprofit “think tank” for health-care innovations.
His professional society affiliations include the Society for Thoracic Surgeons, American College of Legal Medicine and the American and New York State bar associations.
Green earned his undergraduate degree at Le Moyne College in 1989. He also holds an MBA degree from Cornell University, a juris doctorate from Syracuse University College of Law, and a medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School.
Green completed his residency in general surgery, fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery, and internship in general surgery at Stanford University, along with an additional fellowship in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the University of Virginia.
Besides his medical work, Green is also a partner in the Fayetteville law firm of Centolella Green Law, P.C. focusing on health-care law, according to the firm’s website.
