USDOT awards Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport $360K in funding for improvements

ITHACA — The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has announced $360,000 for improvements at Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport.

The airport will use the funding for design improvements on its runway, U.S. Senators Charles Schumer (D–N.Y.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D–N.Y.) announced in a recent news release.

Ithaca Tompkins hasn’t conducted redevelopment work on its lone runway since 1998, Robert Nicholas, manager of Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport, said in the release.

“Wear and tear of the runway, caused particularly by the hard winters we experience in upstate New York, has brought the runway to a condition where it will need to be completely rehabilitated, full length and full width in 2015 and this is a necessary step to get to that end,” Nicholas said.

The funding is part of the Airport Improvement Program (AIP), which the USDOT’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) administers, the lawmakers said.

The AIP provides grants to public agencies for the planning and development of public-use airports that are included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems.

The Airport and Airway Trust fund, which user fees, fuel taxes, and other similar revenue sources support, provides funds for the AIP, according to the lawmakers.

The Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport services 50,000 aircraft operations per year, with scheduled air service from major airlines servicing nearly 250,000 passengers annually, according to the news release.
