USDOT awards Syracuse Airport Authority $1.8M for building construction

SYRACUSE — The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority more than $1.8 million in funding for the construction of a new building at the Syracuse Hancock International Airport.

Hancock Airport will use the building to house and protect snow-removal equipment.

U.S. Representative Dan Maffei (D–DeWitt) and Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner made the announcement in a news release distributed on Thursday.

“As all Syracusans know, any efforts to support snow removal are critical to the daily operations of our community,” Miner said in the release.

Besides this funding, Maffei and Miner also announced more than $6 million in funding for improvements to Hancock Airport last summer.

They announced last July 23 a nearly $1.6 million grant to help the airport pay for the purchase of a sand spreader, a snow plow, aircraft rescue and fire fighting suits, and improvements to the airport’s runway.

Then, just over a week later, they announced a $4.5 million grant to pay for the construction of a new remain-overnight (RON) apron and a new taxiway to help keep flights on time.
