Utica company wins $3.5 million Department of Defense contract

UTICA  —  USA Sewing will manufacture 115,000 flame-resistant combat gloves for the U.S. Army after winning a contract from the Department of Defense.

The company has already hired 60 workers at its headquarters on Utica’s Broad Street to support the contract, which is for $3.5 million. It will continue hiring until it has added a total of 100 employees, according to a news release from U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer.

“I am confident this is the first of many incoming federal contracts for USA Sewing and other Central New York manufacturers because of their proven record of excellence,” Schumer said. “These jobs will be a boost for the Utica economy and the Central New York work force.”

The gloves, which will be made with Kevlar, will also protect against fragments and hard impacts, according to the news release.

“We’ll continue to work with the Department of Defense and other contractors who look to Utica, New York, for a quality product they can rely on,” USA Sewing President Giovanni Inserra said.
