Utica outlines next phase of city improvements

UTICA, N.Y. — Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri recently unveiled his $27 million third phase of projects utilizing funding through the Utica Prosperity Initiative via the America Rescue Plan Act.

Proposed projects and initiatives include increasing the police force to combat gun violence, investing in the improvement of city parks and recreation, purchasing plow trucks and other equipment for the city’s department of public works, adding a fire truck and refurbishing current fire apparatus, making necessary repairs to public facilities, technological upgrades for public safety, investing in the Westside Senior Center, beautification of Varick Street, investment in Johnson Park Center, and establishing a fund reserve for each council district.

“The Utica Prosperity Initiative is providing our community a unique opportunity to enhance the quality of life for our residents,” Palmieri said in a news release. “Through strategic investment, we are promoting Utica’s existing assets with a mission to make our community an attraction and a destination.”

Last year, the city solicited public input to determine the community’s top priorities, projects, and programs. The Utica Prosperity Initiative was formed as a result.

The city is currently implementing phase one and two projects and initiatives, which include child-care expansion, a residential rehabilitation program, infrastructure improvements (paving and sewer), affordable-housing initiatives, investment in community assets, assistance for low-income students, and mentorship for at-risk students interested in careers in public safety.
