Utica–Rome area tops state’s regions in job growth over the last year

The Utica–Rome metro area beat out all of New York’s metro areas with a 4.4 percent increase in private-sector jobs and a 3.2 percent rise in total jobs over the last year, according to state Department of Labor (DOL) data issued Thursday.

The Mohawk Valley area added 4,300 private-sector positions and 4,200 total nonfarm jobs between August 2011 and August 2012.

The New York City area was second in the state with a 2.9 percent increase in private-sector positions, adding 93,100 jobs, and a 2 percent rise in total nonfarm jobs, adding 77,400 positions, in the last 12 months.

The Syracuse metro area added 2,900 private-sector jobs, a 1.1 percent increase, and 2,200 total nonfarm jobs, a 0.7 percent rise, between August 2011 and August 2012.

The Binghamton area lost 600 private-sector positions, a 0.7 percent decline, and 600 total nonfarm jobs, a 0.6 percent decrease, in the last 12 months. Only Elmira and Glens Falls posted larger percentage declines in jobs than Binghamton in the last year, according to the state DOL.
