VA appoints Hayman director of the Syracuse VA Medical Center

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced it has appointed Judy Hayman as the new director of the Syracuse VA Medical Center.

Hayman has been the acting director since April when previous director, James Cody, retired, according to Robert McLean, public affairs officer for the Syracuse VA Medical Center.

Hayman is the first woman to hold the position, McLean said. Hayman joined the VA more than 10 years ago.

She will oversee delivery of health care to more than 52,000 veterans, an operating budget of $300 million, and 1,700 employees, the VA said.

“We are excited that Dr. Hayman has been appointed as the new director of the Syracuse VA Medical Center,” Dr. Joan E. McInerney, Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 2 director, said in a news release. “Her sound leadership qualities and proven experience will be valuable assets for the facility, the employees and volunteers, and most importantly, for the veterans we are honored to serve.”

Hayman holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey. She is a member of the Chicago, Illinois–based American College of Healthcare Executives.

The Syracuse VA Medical Center is a 136-bed general medical and surgical referral center. It includes a 16-bed acute care psychiatric unit, a 48-bed community living center, and a spinal cord injury center.

It is also a teaching facility affiliated with Upstate Medical University and operates community based outpatient clinics in Massena, Watertown, Oswego, Auburn, Rome, Binghamton, and Freeville in Tompkins County — altogether serving 13 counties in Central New York.
