Verizon Wireless expands 4G LTE network in Syracuse area

Verizon Wireless recently activated new 4G LTE coverage on 21 sites in the Syracuse area, expanding and filling in coverage on the high-speed data network it launched locally in August 2011, according to a company news release.

The new 4G LTE sites are located in Altmar, Baldwinsville, Brookfield, Camillus, Central Square, Cuyler, East Syracuse, Fulton (two sites), Hannibal, Hastings, Lafayette, Lysander, Marcellus, Marietta, New Woodstock, Preble, Pulaski, Spafford, Skaneateles and Syracuse (two sites), according to the release.

The 4G LTE network, which Verizon launched nationwide in December 2010, enables customers to use their mobile devices to surf the Internet and download files at speeds up to 10 times faster than customers on 3G networks, the company contends.

The Verizon 4G LTE network is now available to more than 273 million people across the U.S. — close to 89 percent of the U.S. population, the release said.

Founded in 2000, Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE, NASDAQ: VZ) and Vodafone (NASDAQ: VOD). The company’s website says it is the largest 4G LTE network in the U.S.

Verizon Wireless is headquartered in Basking Ridge, N.J. It now serves 98.2 million retail connections and operates more than 1,900 stores and kiosks. The company employs more than 73,500 people nationwide and generated $75.9 billion in revenue in 2012.
