Vets institute, Whitman win grant

SYRACUSE — The Institute for Veterans and Military Families and the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University (SU) won a grant of more than $854,000 to implement management certificate and degree programs for veterans.

The funding, from the Graduate Management Admission Council, is part of $7.1 million awarded to 12 organizations in six countries as part of the second round in the organization’s Ideas to Innovation Challenge.

The institute and Whitman will partner to develop the Veteran Employment through Modified Graduate Management Tracks, which will run from July 2012 through June 2015, according to SU. Based on input from employers and collaboration with educators, the project will yield credit-bearing and certificate coursework tracks from colleges and disciplines to leverage veterans’ technical training and leadership experience in development of business leadership skills.

A number of other schools and programs at SU will participate in the project as well.

“The collaboration for this project will continue Syracuse University’s leading commitment to veteran education,” James Schmeling, veterans institute managing director and co-founder, said in a news release. “Partnering with each of these programs and colleges allows development of curricular tracks ideally suited to preparing veterans for management across several sectors, and builds on training and education acquired during their military service.

“Preparing veterans for management careers will enhance their ability to meet the needs of business and industry, and the social and private sectors, while advancing the veteran employment agenda.”
